The original WRFS-FM — known as “Radio’s Finest Station” — first began broadcasting from Alexander City in 1949, and the legacy call sign came back to the Lake Martin area on March 28, 2015. Authority to construct the new WRFS was initially granted to Marble City Media LLC, licensee of stations based in Sylacauga, in 2012.
The new 105.1 WRFS antenna is strategically located at a high point in Rockford, Coosa County, Ala. — about 18 miles west of Alexander City-Lake Martin, 20 miles south of Sylacauga, 50 miles northwest of Auburn, 25 miles north of Wetumpka, 25 miles east of Clanton, 40 miles north of Montgomery, and 55 miles southeast of Birmingham. Our amazing omnidirectional signal reaches into parts of more than 18 counties.
Once the largest man-made body of water in the world and still one of the largest in the United States with more than 750 miles of wooded shoreline, Lake Martin covers 44,000 acres in Coosa, Elmore, and Tallapoosa counties. The lake is an important economic and recreational center for Alabama, providing boating, fishing, camping, golfing, and other recreational opportunities. The dam’s four generators, typically operating only 25% of the time, produce some 154,200 kilowatts of hydroelectric power annually.
